The clinical benefits of using Vitamin A topically are widely documented and soundly tested.
Not all Vitamin A is created equally or works in the same way.
Retinols are derivatives of Vitamin A which actually work as an anti-oxidant. A relatively new player that is widely touted as a natural Vitamin A alternative - Backuchiol belongs to the Retinol class. Anti-Oxidants are great for free-radical scavengening, they do not however, provide the clinical benefits attributed to Retinoids.
Louthera uses Vitamin A palmitate - a Retinoid. A Retinoid is a bio-available molecule which is easily absorbed through the skin and able to be used efficiently by the body by being converted in to retinoic acid which binds to receptors on the outer membrane of cells. Retinoids are proved to unclog pores, stimulate collagen production and improve collagen density. In Australia, Retinoids are regulated and by law the percentage used in non-prescription products must be <1%.
So people, read your labels before reading the hype!
Retinoids are scientifically proven, they do have some caveats which should not be ignored
- Not recommended during pregnancy of breast feeding
- Can cause photo-sensitivity (use only at night and wear sunscreen/cover-up during the day)
- Can cause irritation (a step up regime is recommended)
